ST. CLOUD, MN (January 31, 2022) –
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota launched their Be Big in 22 campaign at the beginning of January, which coincides with National Mentoring Month. This campaign is aimed at recruiting mentors to pair with youth on their waiting list. The campaign will run until March 31st.
The local mentoring agency is reaching out to their current Bigs and volunteers for referrals, partnering with Starbucks to host recruitment events, and participating in community events & outreach.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has an urgent need for Big Brothers. Recruiting male mentors is one of the greatest challenges that mentoring programs face. Boys typically wait longer than girls to be matched. Nationally, 66% of youth on the waiting list for Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations are boys, but only 36% of volunteer mentors are men.
Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota aspires to impact that statistic. In addition to their school-based and community-based mentoring options, they have new and innovative mentoring initiatives that appeal to specific interests and fit all types of schedules.
Sports Buddies, presented by Scheels, pairs mentors with youth (ages 8-16). They meet 1-2 times a month and spend their time together participating in a variety of sports-related activities.
Bigs on Campus mentors meet with their mentees at the St. Cloud State University campus twice each month. This program provides an opportunity to introduce youth to college life and help prepare them for post-secondary education.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota currently has over 100 children waiting for a mentor. To learn how you can make a difference in the life of a child, please call (320) 253-1616 or visit BigDefenders.org.
